Chateau Guiraud Sauternes Premiere Cru 1999
Was 199.99 Now 149.99
Still ageing nicely, the 1999 vintage marks the end of the century. An intense and complex bouquet, with peach, apricot, mango, candied white fruit, honey, vanilla, elderflower, lily of the valley and roast aromas. Full on the palate, fat, fleshy, fresh citrus fruit alongside apricot with apple tart and cloves, very sweet and concentrated. Beautifully pure with lots of substance, a precise attack, very slender characterised by the Sauvignon Blanc. Chateau Guiraud Sauternes Premiere Cru 1999 shows loads of wonderful botrytis character, with sweet mace and sweet tobacco on the palate with a super long finish. Its exceptional potential will allow this wine to be laid down as well as to be enjoyed rapidly.
The first growth Chateau Guiraud is produced from 85 hectares of Sauternes appellation estate vines. Only Semillon (65%) and Sauvignon Blanc (35%) are planted at Guiraud. Harvest is done by hand-picking by successive waves through the vineyard (2 to 7 selections), picking only the botrytised berries. It is all about quality over quantity. The resulting nectar is fermented in new oak barrels over a period of three weeks to two months. The wine is then aged in barrels for 24 months. Chateau Guiraud uses only traditional winemaking methods.
DANIEL ROGOV REVIEW: Golden yellow towards bronze in color, full-bodied and with generous apricot, citrus and floral aromas and flavors. Excellent balance between generous honeyed sweetness and natural acidity keep the wine lively. Long and with a hint of ripe melon on the finish. Drink now-2030, perhaps longer.

Chateau Malmaison Baronne Nadine de Rothschild 2001
Was 49.99 Now 32.99
This delicious medium to full bodied, opaque purple/red hued wine is rich, complex and full of promise. After allowing to breathe for one hour the tight nose opens nicely to exhibit aromas of blackberry, cherry, cedar wood, vanilla and leather. On the palate, the the upfront plum, currant and blackberry flavors are well balanced by the delicate oak, refreshing acidity, loads of velvety tannins and a rich, thick finish which is long and delicious.
The wine was matured in new and year-old casks that confer smoothness, elegance and finesse – female traits befitting the Baroness Nadine de Rothschild. Amazing quality for this estate.
Best after 2010.

Chateau de Valandraud Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2001
Was 399.99 Now $299.99
Readers of the Wine Advocate and collectors of the micro-produced "garage" wines of Saint Emilion know Valandraud to be the first of these remarkable specialty wines to be made in Bordeaux. Fashioned with an attention to detail impossible at larger estates, Valandraud is one of the most intense, complex and dramatic red wines made in France. First encounters are almost shocking, as if the wine were made at Harlan or Screaming Eagle but drier and more refined. Proprietor Jean-Luc Thunevin and wife Murielle were perspicacious enough to make 100 cases of the very first 'garage' Kosher wine in the world! Deeply colored. Rich, tight, brooding nose at first but the 2001 slowly unfolds to reveal very enticing black raspberry and bitter chocolate aromas. Sweet, supple and broad but not at all over the top. Rich flavors of cocoa powder and spices. Decidedly modern in style on the palate, with well-extracted fruit. The wine's big, rich, chewy tannins are a bit stern, but the wine's length is impressive. Excellent acidity keeps everything moving like a wagon train across the palate.
As hard as it may be to believe, Valandraud’s 2001 is better than their 2000. One of the great efforts from proprietors Murielle Andraud and Jean-Luc Thunevin, the 2001 Valandraud boasts a saturated plum/purple color as well as a sumptuously sweet nose of Varhona chocolate intertwined with espresso roast, blackberries, cherry jam, and currants. Full-bodied, opulent, voluptuously textured, pure, rich, and seriously endowed, this is a brilliant effort from Bordeaux’s leading revolutionary. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020.

Chateau Lafon Rochet Saint Estephe 2003
Was 129.99 Now 109.99
The origin of Lafon Rochet's vines goes back to the 17th century when, in 1650, Antoinette de Guillemotte, brought the land of ’Rochette’ as her dowry to her husband, Pierre de Lafon, a Councillor in the Bordeaux Parliament. In common with many other bordeaux wine properties, it was not long before the estate took on the name of its owner, and became Château Lafon-Rochet. In spite of the French Revolution in 1789, the estate remained in the hands of this far-sighted family for more than two centuries. They did much for the reputation of its wines, and were duly rewarded by their inclusion in the 1855 Classification, one of only 5 estates from St-Estèphe to receive this honor. In 1880, Madame Lafon de Camarsac died, after which the estate changed hands several times. When Guy Tesseron became the new owner in 1959, it was in serious need of restoration. At this point began the renaissance of Château Lafon-Rochet, which in a few years, was to restore it to its former glory.
Having first put the vineyards back in to good order, Guy Tesseron turned his attention to the vinification buildings and the Château itself, which were all in a very dillapitated state. Judging them to be too far gone, he decided to build an entirely new Château in the Chartreuse style of the 18th century. The estate includes a single 100 acre block of vineyards in the distinguished Saint Estephe Grand Cru appellation, next to the estate of Lafitte Rothschild.
Characteristic of wines from Saint Estephe, this red is powerful, rich, concentrated, full bodied and smooth. It is a blend of 55% Cabernet, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Chateau Lafon Rochet's vineyards and vintners produce wine of a rich and dense character that will age gracefully for years to come. This is a sleeper of a vintage with dense blue/purple color. It exhibits plenty of blackberry, cassis and graphite along with a touch of toasty new oak. The wine is more backward than expected, but it possesses full-bodied, concentrated flavors as well as good elegance, purity, and overall equilibrium. This is a long-distance runner. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.
